..........Tuesday the 23rd there were two Cowboy Action shooters doing some load development and getting sight settings on a few rifles. One had one of these 'tip down' single shot rifles in 38-55. Since Glen and I both own 38-55 we talked to the owner for a bit. He then let us shoot it a couple times after showing us some targets he'd fired that day at 50 yards. If the accuracy of HIS rifle is any indication of what one can expect from one of these rather inexpensive rifles, then why pay a ton for a High-Wall or some other single shot? He'd fired 3 rounds at each sight adjustment and each one was close enough to being a 3 lobed hole, as makes no difference. I was surely impressed by what I saw. I have a nice Marlin M93, but if some spare dinero happened to be at hand, I might just have to spring for one of these things. It had a very nice trigger, BTW. ...........Buckshot

I have 4 of these rifles, a 30-30, 357 Maximum (a 357 Mag rechambered) a 44 Magnum and a 45-70. Fed good loads, all these guns will shoot into an inch at 75 yards, (the limit of my backyard range) I have been following threads on these guns for over a year now, was a regular poster on the now defunct H&R Talk BB. I took 4 deer with my 44 this year, 2 of them with cast boolits and 1 with the 357 using Hornadys 180 grain XTP condom. I got the 45-70 to work and hunt with using cast boolits exclusively. H&R also offers the 45-70 in a model called the Buffalo Classic, using a 32" barrel. If the cowboy shooters are allowing this gun it would make a fun one to play with in those games. But even though it is disqualified from use in the BPCRS matches (a messy story) these rifles in both the 22" barrel versions and the 38-55 and 45-70 in the 32" barrels make fine plinking, hunting and general enjoyment rifles. They are undoubtedly the best $200 a fellow will ever spend on a rifle. It is very like ly that you will ahve to do some work to the trigger, but as you experienced, they clean up very nicely.

Shooting is the art of making a bullet go where you want it to go.....even when all the odds are against it.

I have really just started working with mine in 357 mag with cast. It seems to be real cast friendly at this point. I even tried to compete in a Shueten match with it once. I ran out of development time before the match but it is still a possibility especially if I get it shooting cast at 200yds.

...........Sure. All a 30-30 is, is a necked 38-55. Just reverse engineer the 30 cal and there ya go. But 38-55 is commonly available. Not REAL 38-55 though. The ammo makers just use 30-30 hulls with a 38-55 headstamp and do not neck them. A REAL 38-55 is I think 2.135" long. Current factory 38-55 is a bit shy of 2.1".

I have ONE old WRA 38-55 which is noticeably longer then the current stuff and chambers fine in my M93 Marlin. Obviously the new stuff leaves a bit of room between the casemouth and chamber end.

Ric and Rick   What it is, is that Buckshot got that K-14 and he's been secretly practicing the double tap with it since it's a double action revolver. That might explain his double post.  Other then that he's normally discubobbulated.
