I have a Remington 700 in 223 that the bore has seen better days. It still shoots "minute of Coyote" out to 300yds, but the "guilding is off of the Lilly" so to speak. I'm thinking that the 25/223 would be a good rebbl for this action. Anyone have any experiance with this "mildcat" I remember reading in the Wildcats book about it, and it seemed pretty good. I beleive they were getting factory 250 Savage balistics out of the smaller case. Any suggestions as to barrel length, rate of twist? I'll mostly be using it for Coyotes, but it may occasionaly be called on to hunt deer.I have a SC 25717 Lyman mold, that throws a 102gr. PB bullet, that should do fine for Turkeys (Oh that's right, can't use rifles for Turkeys in OR)TIAkrag35

Back in the mid 60's, John Wooters developed a great wildcat he called the "'Copperhead". It was just the 222 Remington necked up to 25 cal. It proved to be a fine rifle. I have been planning to build one for many years. I would choose the 222 or the .223 becasue of the longer neck. Clymer still sells reamers in 25-222 Copperhead and Shilen has reamers and chamber barrels in tht caliber.  I am keeping my eyes pealed for a tired 222 to rebarrel.

Dear Krag,

   Heck!! And all along I thought the 25/223 was legal for turkeys and Grouse. Oh well HUH? Anyway, I still end up making anywhere from 3 to 7 or 8 of the 25/223s every year. My own is a little Sako and another in a 600 Rem. Both shoot excellent. Great for coyotes and occasionally a Blacktail at modest ranges. The real beauty of the 25/223 is it`s pretty quiet and still has the oomph to take a deer if you use the right bullet/placement. I like it better than the Copperhead as the 223 cases are plentiful ,cheap and easy to form and load. You will be amazed by the accuracy of almost any of the wildcats based on the 223 case. I have another 600 in 6.5/223 that is uncanny in the accuracy department. Whichever you choose will do you good.

Aloha, Mark[in Or]

Mark;

Just a quick note to say HOWDY and welcome to the Board. I looked forward to your posts on Shooters.com, and it's great to see you here. We have got a GOOD thing going!

What part of Oregon are you hanging your hat in? I was up to Coos Bay early in July for a bit of charter-boat fishing....lovely country and what a change going from desert to rain forest!
