Just barely more than a month to go, and it's time to start beating the drum. The FIFTH iteration of this greatly enjoyable get-together will be held in Winnemucca, in northern Nevada at the junction of I-80 and US 95, on the weekend of May 7-9. Last year's agenda seemed well-liked by all hands, so why mess with success? Ergo: Friday evening will see the meeting of "Rools Kommittee", with a get-acquainted-(or-tell-lies-newly-formulated-since-last-year) dinner at Las Margaritas, or possibly some other restaurant if folks want a change. Saturday we'll start the bang-and-clang around 0800, likely with a lunch at the range around 1300. The day will conclude with the blazing team-peestola match, wherein teams compete to see which can cut an upright plank with their boolits in the shortest time. I suspect we will host the bring-yer-own-meat-and-booze BBQ again at Ragged Ass Ranch, since that was a huge success last year. All the other goodies will be supplied (salads, deserts etc.). Sunday is more of the same, ending on a high note with the team-rifle shoot against Curmudgeon's devilishly-clever secret target array. This is REALLY neat, and I'd bet the method will be adopted by plenty of folks when they return home. The closing dinner will again be at Ormachea's, a top-notch Basque-style dinner place, and one which has become a well-loved tradition for this function. The range is located almost WITHIN town, being less than five minutes from all the amenities, including casinos and brothels (for the, uh, "adventurous")! For those who have yet to attend an NCBS, and whom we hope to see this year, the whole event is largely just a fun get-together at which to meet each other, have fun, and do a LOT of shooting in an informal environment. The basic rules are: -Act safely; -Have fun; -No whining! (Honestly, this has NEVER been a problem....just the opposite, in fact.) Range officers will be supervising to ensure safety, as is necessary when a large group gets together on the range. It won't be as tautly-run as an NRA match, but the basic safety rules DO get enforced. There will be plenty of steel targets to shoot at, plus target stands out to at least 200 yards for paper targets. Informal (bragging-rights) events will include both scoped and iron-sight rifle, plus a couple of handgun events. A set of NRA-standard Field Pistol animal silhouettes will be set up (for PISTOLS only...rifles damage 'em). PLEASE BRING PLENTY OF YOUR OWN FAVORED PAPER TARGETS. Rifle and pistol grouping events will allow the use of your own targets, and it will be one item I don't have to worry overly-much about. There may well be a lever-rifle event, and a mil-surp event, and...only our imaginations set the limits. Hmmm.....how about a BIG-bore event.... .40-caliber rifles or bigger with FULL power loads on steel sofa pillows standing on a 2x4 at 150 yards, off-hand? Target has to be knocked down.BRThe 'pillows' are 4" THICK and a foot square and weigh about 160 pounds...."substantial" would seem to be a good description.) Anyone who shoots cast boolits is welcome! If you can't get here WITH your guns for some reason, then come WITHOUT 'em....you'll find scads of firearms and ammo for your selection and enjoyment. You will also meet the neatest bunch of shooters you could ask for (in the personality sense, that is; physically we seem to run a bit on the scrungy side, 'specially after a day in the sun, wind, dust and powder smoke). It's within a long day's drive from Arizona, Colorado, California, Idaho, Montana, Washington, Oregon, Utah....WHY NOT?

Dep Al ......."I can see I'll be a picture of sloth and decadence when I retire, for sure."

Ahh   At least I will have company if/when I ever get to that point

Still a long ways off for yours truly and it would be my distinct pleasure to just get to things when I want to,instead of when other folks want me too.

As it is,acting when other folks "seem" to want things is kind of a  double edged sword because it seems that unless I require cash deposits on special order items then stuff just gets forgotten/ignored when it arrives. And the old axiom..."if you want things done right you have to do it yourself" is more and more appropriate.

I just seem to see more and more stupidity lately and my outlook isn't for that too improve much. A wish for a pile of cash to drop in my lap ample enough to retire on isn't too realistic so I trudge on....

Since I retired from my primary job as of last Thursday and am looking foreward to my first social security check this month, I will keep you advised as to whether sloth and decadence creeps into my life.  Casting and shooting more will be part of my activities but re-organizing my garage with a front-end loader would probably not be a bad idea, either.  Its kind of like Christmas...I occasionally find things I forgot I owned, which is great.  Its the not finding things I know I own which is greatly annoying.

Last-minute loading.....ooooohhhhh yeah!

Yesterday was my first full day off in what seems like weeks.  I shackled myself to the loading bench at 0900 and didn't surface until the supper bell rang at around 1800.  Productive for sure, but TIRING.

This morning, the ol' eyeballs clanked open as per my normal day-shift timing, at 0345, and I could NOT get back to sleep, with visions of stacks, heaps, PILES of shiny empty brass haunting me.  Thus, I began loading ammo before the sun peeked over the Sonomas, beginning at about 0500.  With my only break being a quick repair on a broken kitchen-sink drain, I loaded ammo until I had to take a nap before coming to work.

I am now OK for .30-40, .303, .338, 7.62x39, .45-70, and reduced-load .416 Rigby  (I will admit to loading ten rounds of what I call "..416 TURBO.....for those who simply HAVE to try it."  This load uses a judicious 105 grains of IMR 4831.... Step right up, folks!)  Still have to finish loading my '06 ammo, and I cannot even FIND my .32 Special brass!?!?

I also have about seven jillion rounds of wildly-assorted handgun stuff.  I hope to reduce my over-supply in that deparment next weekend.

The weather is radically better than a few days ago, and we might even be looking at record heat in the next day or two.  A cooling trend should set in later in the week, which would make very nice conditions for the Shoot.

Just checking the latest extended forecast for Winnemucca, it says Friday and Saturday will be partly cloudy and temps around 69 degrees, while the Sunday outlook has scattered showers with similar temperatures.

We'll keep an eye on this as the time gets nearer.

Ahhhh,

Feeling much, much better about ammo supplies now  Got a pile of 38's loaded up and more 45's of the 454 persuasion this time. Still need 30-30's and 500A2's but that list of needs is dwindling to a few.

The 25-35 will be doubtful for this years festivities however. The brass and boolits aren't a problem, while testing loads this afternoon the forend slipped forward over 3/4"    Not looking good with a huge gap between the reciever and wood I shall repair it upon my return from NV.

I shall instead bring along my Rossi for lever action match duty in 357 . Not quite the sight radius but emmiently serviceable. Not abusive to the body either and I expect a few folks will wonder why I would bring along such a light load, but the 500A2 and the 458X2 will provide bodily abuse quite well.

Just a few days now....And I have purchased a new mode of travel for the NCBS trip to and fro. This will suffice until a new engine for the Toyota is aquired as is my plan. The "new" car is a doozy, twenty years old and bearing a now discontinued moniker--Oldsmobile. I picked up a 1984 Cutlass Supreme, your proto-typical sunday only car,it has but 52K original miles. Nearly right off the showroom floor it is fully equipped will all power assists available at the time and is very plush. I should have ample room for all the toys and needed sundries.

..........Well, if you see some cute babe, just tell her you're driving your grandma's car while your Cobra is in the shop . Heck what am I talking about? We had an '86 Chev Celebrity (2.8 V6) we put 186K miles on and only had the harmonic balancer changed. Same alt, same starter, same water pump. Great car, but then again I've been married for 29 years so what do I care .

Here we GO!!!!

Let's meet up at The Griddle at 1pm Friday. 'Bout all that needs doing is picking up tables and chairs from Tru-Value Hardware, and perhaps some steel from Carwil Industries and psossibly the steel silhouettes IF I can finally make contact with the Club guy who stores them. Then we can get down to some serious beer-drinkin' and lying.

Hope this catches Buckshot and Al before they pull up stakes for their mission of destruction.....

Well,

I'm ready...I think     Got the car loaded and got everything in that's supposed to be there. I hope    As much room as the "new" Olds has over the lil' Toyota of old I think I am bringing along about the same amount of gear as last year. Only one trunk to load plus the back seat vs two trunks and the passenger seat in the toyota.

Just had a thought that Dep. Al probably forgot the ATF pin he forgot to bring last year.    What ya wanna bet?  Just in case he did I am bringing along a gift from the SHOT Show, details to follow from Winnemucca.

<evil grin>

Looking forward to sling galena in Nevada      45nut

I hope you guys all have a good time. I wish I could be there, but had to make the choice between Windymucca, or visiting family next month. I will gain a bit of shooting solace, however, as I leave for Pincher Creek, Alberta tomorrow for a shoot. Only one tank of gas round trip, so I can handle that one.  Then our club spring shoot is next weekend, and I'll have to be on site next Thursday for set up on that one.

A toast to you all;

Here's to the Cast Boolit boys. There are none like us, and none like us!

..........Here we are at the BruceB Homestead. We BBQ'd dinner this evening. Steaks, Brats, chops, burgers, etc. Ms BruceB and my bride Donna prepared seveal salads and other side dishs. We're all stuffed! The weather today was about perfect for this area. Lots of sun, a few high clouds and not much wind until later in the afternoon, and then not bad.

Today the team shoot (stake shoot) was peestols and there were 3 teams of 5 shooting. First team to shoot their 8" wide board in half in the least time was the winner. Will report names and times later. Tomorrow will be the rifle team shoot for which Curmudgeon has some special deal cooked up.

My apologies for the delay in posting about the Fifth Annual NCBS. By the time we left Curmudgeon's digs last night at 11pm or so, and having to get up for work at 0345, and being DEAD BEAT from all the activity....well, I hope you'll understand.

We had what I judge to be perfect weather, considering the area and the time of year. Sunshine, scattered cloud, and calm conditions in the mornings changing to fresh winds by noon and increasing gusts as the days progressed, with temperatures in the 70's to low 80s.... we couldn't have asked for a better break from the meteorology sector. Today is radically different, with winds up to 50mph or more, rain and SNOW! Did we dodge a bullet, or what???

I do believe everyone had an excellent time. There weren't quite as many folks as I'd hoped for, but still we had plenty-enough to set up good-sized teams for the mutual-support events and also for a very wide variety of conversation. The "atmosphere" for this Shoot seemed a tad different to me, as it appeared we spent a good bit more time just chatting and BSing even when the firing line was "live". Make no mistake, there was a LOT of shooting going on, but I did think that there was more socializing taking place on the range than previously. It sure was a pleasant and friendly place to be, let me tell you.

Iron-sight Rifle (Grouping), fired from a rest from 50 yards, saw a dead-heat tie between Curmudgeon and his son Jaremy! BOTH fired 5-rounders of exactly 0.95", which is a very respectable performance indeed.

Iron-sight Rifle (Score) was shot off-hand from 50 at a standard NRA 50-yard pistol bullseye target. Buckshot won this one with a score of 47/50. Impressive shooting.

100-yard Scoped Rifle (Grouping), fired from the benchrest, went to Deputy Al with a very neat 1.48" group. Others came close, but never quite managed to beat that figure.

100-yard Scoped Rifle (Score) was shot offhand on the same NRA pistol target
as Iron Sight. Your scribe managed to put five good jerks together and came out with 46/50 to win this one.

Bowling pins at 75 yards constituted the Handgun Score event, with Buckshot winning by smoking two pins for five rounds fired. I think that wind and increased distance (from 60 yards last year) contributed to lower scores on pins this time around.

45nut continued his winning ways by turning in a 1.7" cluster in the Handgun Group event. Nice job.

Long-Range Rifle, fired offhand at an 18" plate from 200 yards, had a three-way tie among ammohead, Buckshot, and Jaremy. Each of these gents made four hits out of five rounds fired. Since ammohead and Buckshot had each won this event in previous years and have the trophies to show for it, they generously gave this year's trophy to Jaremy. Nice guys, eh wot??

The Military Rifle event was open to any non-semi-auto military rifle, unmodified or not, using iron sights and any original loading device such as chargers, strippers, etc. Fired off-hand from 50 yards on the same NRA pistol targets, we had ONE minute, starting with empty rifles, to fire as many rounds as possible and highest total score taking the match. Miz Liz did me proud and I won with a total score of 63 with ten rounds fired. (I had the third charger-load in the rifle and was closing the bolt when time ran out.)

The Lever-Gun Match was run in the same manner, but with a too-short time allowance of 45 seconds. We'll increase that time allowance next time around, and maybe increase the Military Match time period as well. 'Bout 90 seconds should be about right. TimB did a sterling performance and scored 66 points in a blaze of gunfire.

Team Pistol was a stake-cutting shoot at about 20 yards, firing 5-person teams against 8"-wide particle-board "stakes". This was the final event in Saturday's shooting. If memory serves me right, the winning time was 2:20...not bad at all! The members of the winning team were 45nut, ammohead, Mac, Ernie(elblerinnv) and myself.

Team Rifle had a very neat new system which Curmudgeon designed. Pre-drilled clay targets were tied to a 4" plastic mesh at 50 yards, 20 targets per team, and we fired unlimited rounds against the clock. All targets had to show a visible "chip", same as in trapshooting. With the mesh stretched between stakes, the targets appeared to be just hanging in midair, and it was a VERY stimulating event.

On behalf of the "stronger" sex, I blush to admit that the hands that rock the cradle also ruled the Team Rifle Match! Team 3 was comprised of my daughter KimB, my wife KarenB, Tim's wife LoriB, and a couple of turncoat males by name of Curmudgeon and Brazos. They done wiped us'ns on the other teams out in NO uncertain fashion.

That's about it for the shooting events, except to say that there was a heck of a lot more shooting going on than just those events. A full set of NRA Field Silhouettes was on the range as well as many various-sized steel-plate targets and ample target boards for those who wanted to shoot paper.

As we have come to expect, the reality exceeded the expectations, and we had a fantastically-entertaining weekend. From Rools Kommittee at the Flying Pig on Friday to the closing Basque dinner on Sunday, and the wind-up at Curmudgeon's room, it was a blast.

Looking forward to next year already,

Don't remember logging you out Bruce ! I did log in to show a couple fellow boolit masters a couple things but your handle was there as logged in last time I looked...and By All Means the post credit is truly yours and the style of your post is quite evident. I just don't have that style and gracious way of putting things.

As You said Bruce, comparing last year to this year, the feeling of competition was different. It always felt as if we had a week to shoot and the were no feelings "that this must get done" and the ammo consumed bore that out. I have a sizeable supply of "left-over" ammo as well as a sizeable amount of spent brass.

The shoot was my second, but I think the three days spent in Winnemucca shall always be fondly remembered. I am already looking forward to my third and the folks that made it were lucky folks indeed. Meeting new faces like Ernie and Powderburner and Brazos as well as the "regulars" was great. Many fond memories to reflect back on.   45nut

Bruce,  You are coming in loud, clear, and clearly yourself.  What a dastardly deed, and by a dinner guest, too!  Jaremy and I just got home, having stopped off to deliver the best wishes of all the NCBS attendees to Duke.  Jaremy had a great time.  He arrived a little apprehensive about being in the company of so many parental-appearing types, but soon was astounded by the eagerness of all hands to press upon him their pet firearms, ammuntion, and most thoughtful advice.  He was awed by the genuine interest of so many non-family elders in him as a person.  It won't surprise me if he is back next shoot with his own poured projectiles.  I believe that this new manifestation of Jaremy is going to make gift shopping easier and more fun.  Thanks to all for encouraging him, curmudgeon

Bruce B--

I knew who was posting that account of NCBS--no problemo.  I'll have similar entertainments on my computer at work when I return next month--if that place was a zoo, then the detective bureau would be its monkey house.

The weather definitely smiled on on us--both in Cedarville and in Winnemucca.  The wind wasn't much of a distraction--the respective Chambers of Commerce called them "therapeutic breezes", while weather stations listed same at "gale force" (thanks, Joseph Wambaugh).  Wind is just something you learn to live with, especially in the desert.  I stop hunting/shooting only when I can't stand up in it.

Many thanks for hosting a warm, delightful meeting.  You're right--sometimes discussion got the better of shooting at range time.  I didn't do a great deal of talking, because the listening and learning was a rare oppurtunity I tried to take full advantage of--at the range, at the barbecue, wherever.

I was gratified to receive my first event trophy this year.  That it came from a rifle event was kinda surprising!  I am fully at fault for failure to do better with the handgun venues.......my best loads in the best revolvers (S&W Model 16-4 x 6"/32 Mag and Colt OMT 38 Special x 6") all went downrange at metal targets on Saturday, and all that was left for the pin shoot was the M-686 x 4" and Lyman 358156's at about 1350 FPS.  Sight radius was the culprit, methinks.......5 VERY close misses in a row.

The cast loads in the Tokarev were a pleasant surprise--they only got a short test drive before they came to NCBS--and did pretty well, considering what a balky platform the Tokarev can be.  Only a few feeding hitches, and those can be fixed with an OAL adjustment I believe.  The boolits go right to point of aim--at 200 yards!  That's a pretty tall rear sight on the Tok.

A great, great time!

Everyone was so kind and gracious, herself and I had a wonderful time at this years NCBS.  Our thanks to Bruce and Karen, for hosting us all, and for the great Saturday night feed.  We met  and visited with so many great people that some times it seemed there was less time to shoot than planned.  That's ok, we shot our guns and yours aplenty, and participated in some of the matches, and never wasted a moment.  It was great to see some young folks at the shoot, and hope they continue to participate, forever and ever.

Attendees this year:

Deputy Al, California

Buckshot and Mrs. Buckshot, California

Curmudgeon and Jaremy, California (for now)

Cobbmtmac and Mrs. Cobbmtmac, California in the lovely coastal mountains, and Grandma, bless her

45nut, Oregon

TimB and Mrs. TimB, Oregon

Onceabull and Mrs. Onceabull (nee Idabull), Idaho

Ammohead, Nevada

Brazos, Nevada

BruceB, and KarenB, and KimB, our gracious hosts, Nevada

Powder Burner, Nevada

And lastly, your humble correspondent, Elblerinnv and Mrs. Elblerinnv, Nevada

Thanks to all, and we hope to see every one of you next year.

Ernie and LINDA

There is a pic of the now-famous pistolero Buckshot with a special presentation trophy I had made up for him commemorating his modestly mentioned feats of skill and endurance with a handgun.

Actually I know there are a few other skilled handgunners hereabouts but ole' Toby's best friend was the first here to go over a thousand posts and I wanted to make sure he knew how much his support to the site was appreciated.    More pics from NCBS 2004 forthcoming.     45nut

Looks like you guys had fun.  Glad to see at least one of the gang appears to be sporting a real handgun.   I wish I could have participated but gas is not cheap these days.  I am trying to work up the courage to go bear hunting next week.  No, I am not afraid of the bears -- I am afraid of what it is going to cost to fill up both tanks on my 12 mpg truck.

Personally, I think it's scandalous that BruceB tricks you people into delivering a thousand pounds of lead safely deposited into his berm every year. No stooping for wheelweights for him! If that mine ever closes, he'll probably go to Alaska and sell refrigerators! I congratulate you all on the good times you had. Maybe next year I'll get off my butt and join you.

Thanks for posting the pictures. Using the Hunt 101 site was a good idea.

I've got to make it one of these years. Once I get family obligations out of the way this year, I may just have to tell the local guys to wing it without me on set up next spring here. I despise the fact I have to work to make money. Gonna buy one of those lottery tickets one of these days.

I've been busier than a batch of Muslims sorting hogs this week, so haven't got the internet match info put together to post yet. And I'm off early tomorrow to help set up our club spring shoot. Deputy Al, never got your targets. I bet they could make it before Monday if you put it in the out box tomorrow.

.........I've got some pictures to be put on a CD as soon as I can remember to do it. As everyone else said, it was again a great time. Just like a family reunion, but everyone likes everyone else. A bunch of politically incorrect people who enjoy lots of the same things, and talk the same language.

I did miss Duke and Wheelman and hope to see them next year. Anyone heard from Ben? He said he was going to be there, but not a peep. I really enjoyed both the team pistol and rifle match immensely. Both events were shoot as fast and as accuratly as you can. TimB's wife Lori had her SAA so hot she had to lay it down to punch out the empties and to reload. I personally fired 67 rounds from my K38 at our stake. Our time (team 3) was 3 mins, 11 seconds.

There was shooting aplenty going on in addition to the various 'Award' type events but as a couple others mentioned, there was also a lot of visiting going on also. It seemed to be a more sedate pace which is something as it's ALWAYS been a pretty laid back affair. I think it just points to the fact that it IS a big family deal of which we're all a part of, and we had a years worth of personal catching up to do with each other.

BruceB's SchuetzenWagen is really set up well. A place for everything, and everything in it's place. All he needs now is a hammock and an awning to be complete.

Me, Donna and Deputy Al arrived in town early Thursday afternoon after a nice drive from Cedarville. After checking in and dumping our junk in the motel room we visited the 2 hardware stores carrying guns. Reliable had one of the S&W 50's in it's display case sporting a 10" bbl. What a monster of a handgun! Both places carried an amazing number or rifles and handguns, reloading supplies and components. The ACE hardware had a real good price on #11 percussion caps and I was going to get a thousand before leaving but forgot.

Friday night dinner at The Flying Pig was great. Donna and I shared a 2 person dinner of a BBQ'd chicken and ribs, beans and slaw and it was more than either of use could clean up. We forced Ammohead to take some and finally had to call it quits, starving people in Europe or not. I was presented the trophy in the previous photo, which was very humbling and I'm really gratefull to have it. It is sitting on my mantle here at the house. To be sure, my noteriety with a handgun was short lived, as Deputy Al came back a few weeks later and beat EVERYONE, not just me (which is no great shakes)by way of a left handed compliment.

Ditto at BruceB's Saturday night. All the side dishes overwhelmed our steaks and I think the word 'Gorge' wouldn't do justice to what was being done. I did my level best to sample everything but it just wasn't possible, and I'm pretty good about putting away groceries! Add in all the good company and how could it have been better?

We all enjoyed truly fine weather for the shoot both days with lots of sunshine, a few fleecy white clouds and some not too bothersome breezes in the afternoon. Too soon came the dinner at Ormacheas Sunday night. Presentation of the awards that Curmudgeon made for the various shoots and then leaving the resturant, the traditional "Duke's Room" gathering. Handshakes, hugs and "see ya next year" remarks were made and final waves as we all headed out across the parking lot to our cars and then to various motels and an early start out the next morning.

Both the drive up to Cedarville, across to Winnemucca and then back to So. Calif was easily made with not much traffic and it was a pleasant and scenic trip with good company. The total milage from my doorstep to Cedarville, Ca then Winnemucca, NV and back to Redlands, Ca was a total of 1801 miles which consumed 87 gallons of fuel and we averaged 20.7 MPG in the Sport Trac for the entire trip.

Gee, just think. Only another 357 or so days till next time

.............Buckshot

Ric--

I'll stuff the targets into the mailbox today--thanks for extending this oppurtunity, sir.  No chance of taking win, place, or show--but I'll saddle up and run anyway.

All--

That was my own self piloting the Range Vehicle on that downrange venture.  I wasn't so much worried about the bumper dragging as I was about range staff tumbling out.
