Just barely more than a month to go, and it's time to start beating the drum. The FIFTH iteration of this greatly enjoyable get-together will be held in Winnemucca, in northern Nevada at the junction of I-80 and US 95, on the weekend of May 7-9. Last year's agenda seemed well-liked by all hands, so why mess with success? Ergo: Friday evening will see the meeting of "Rools Kommittee", with a get-acquainted-(or-tell-lies-newly-formulated-since-last-year) dinner at Las Margaritas, or possibly some other restaurant if folks want a change. Saturday we'll start the bang-and-clang around 0800, likely with a lunch at the range around 1300. The day will conclude with the blazing team-peestola match, wherein teams compete to see which can cut an upright plank with their boolits in the shortest time. I suspect we will host the bring-yer-own-meat-and-booze BBQ again at Ragged Ass Ranch, since that was a huge success last year. All the other goodies will be supplied (salads, deserts etc.). Sunday is more of the same, ending on a high note with the team-rifle shoot against Curmudgeon's devilishly-clever secret target array. This is REALLY neat, and I'd bet the method will be adopted by plenty of folks when they return home. The closing dinner will again be at Ormachea's, a top-notch Basque-style dinner place, and one which has become a well-loved tradition for this function. The range is located almost WITHIN town, being less than five minutes from all the amenities, including casinos and brothels (for the, uh, "adventurous")! For those who have yet to attend an NCBS, and whom we hope to see this year, the whole event is largely just a fun get-together at which to meet each other, have fun, and do a LOT of shooting in an informal environment. The basic rules are: -Act safely; -Have fun; -No whining! (Honestly, this has NEVER been a problem....just the opposite, in fact.) Range officers will be supervising to ensure safety, as is necessary when a large group gets together on the range. It won't be as tautly-run as an NRA match, but the basic safety rules DO get enforced. There will be plenty of steel targets to shoot at, plus target stands out to at least 200 yards for paper targets. Informal (bragging-rights) events will include both scoped and iron-sight rifle, plus a couple of handgun events. A set of NRA-standard Field Pistol animal silhouettes will be set up (for PISTOLS only...rifles damage 'em). PLEASE BRING PLENTY OF YOUR OWN FAVORED PAPER TARGETS. Rifle and pistol grouping events will allow the use of your own targets, and it will be one item I don't have to worry overly-much about. There may well be a lever-rifle event, and a mil-surp event, and...only our imaginations set the limits. Hmmm.....how about a BIG-bore event.... .40-caliber rifles or bigger with FULL power loads on steel sofa pillows standing on a 2x4 at 150 yards, off-hand? Target has to be knocked down.BRThe 'pillows' are 4" THICK and a foot square and weigh about 160 pounds...."substantial" would seem to be a good description.) Anyone who shoots cast boolits is welcome! If you can't get here WITH your guns for some reason, then come WITHOUT 'em....you'll find scads of firearms and ammo for your selection and enjoyment. You will also meet the neatest bunch of shooters you could ask for (in the personality sense, that is; physically we seem to run a bit on the scrungy side, 'specially after a day in the sun, wind, dust and powder smoke). It's within a long day's drive from Arizona, Colorado, California, Idaho, Montana, Washington, Oregon, Utah....WHY NOT?

The 243 is accurate--the load and the boolit just plain work.  As long as the operator stays on task and the wind isn't too brisk, the gig works GREAT.

I wish I could say the same for the 250 Savage AND the 25-20.  I did get some good results on Sunday, but consistency was elusive--and it wasn't wind-generated stringing, either.  There is some element I'm missing here.

I thought the same about the dinky boolits, too.  The 22 calibers were and remain a humbling experience.  The 243 was a surprise, albeit a very pleasant one.  The 25's need further work, and probably a shorter/lighter boolit design for the 1-14" and 1-16" twists I'm dealing with in those calibers.  Maybe a little more velocity, too.

It's a good thing I enjoy the chase as much as I do the catch.

Deputy Al--Other than in a .223,I would have thought the.22 cal RCBS would work equally as well as the .243's are doing. Try em in a .222 and if they don't work I'll be shocked. I'm a guessing when 45Nutt gets his 25 cal mold a going he'll report some good results too.

C-man......

I have no answer for the 22 boolits not doing well.  I tried them in 223 (1-9" twist) and 22-250 (1-14" twist) at varying velocities, and like Gertrude Stein said about California--"There's no there there."  Yer right--there is no good reason the 22 boolits shouldn't work as well as the 243 boolits do, or that the 25 caliber boolits get creative like they do--they just DO.  I know you have fine success with the 22's, so it's obviously something I'm doing or some attribute of the rifles used.  In the past I tried Lyman #225415 in a heavy barrelled Rem 700 x 223 I used to have (1-14" twist), and its patterns at 50 yards weren't far behind the Broomhandle Mauser in field-covering comprehensive distribution.  Basically, the boolits might hit something--but if that thing were the intended target, it was purely an accident or extremely poor fortune on the target's part.  The same rifle would go into the low .4's with Sierra 52 grain BTHP's.

222 Remington-calibered rifles don't exactly grow on trees these days, but one of them would be fun to play with.

Allen,  Nothing to contribute re .22 cast boolits, but I can add a bit of trivia.  Gertrude Stein said "there was no there, there" about Oakland.  She had lived there as a child and went back to see the old neighborhood.  Nothing was as she remembered.  I have had a similar experience.  We lived in Torrance during WWII.  nearly all the houses, including ours, were new, having been built in 1942.  About 1979 I went back to see what the old street looked like.  All the 1942 houses were gone and had been replaced by new houses that had been there long enough to be themselves declining.  Indeed, there was no there, there. Exactly how long is the half-life of a California subdivision? Bill

Bill--I didn't know that Oakland was Gertie's specific target of that anecdote.  Thanks, sir.  That Oakland can claim both Gertrude Stein and Jack London as denizens just says volumes about Northern California political thought.  We do raise a few Republicans down south, at least.

Half-life of CA subdivision......two generations, tops.  In a lot of towns, the houses are hitting the skids in under 20 years.  In my area, San Bernardino and Moreno Valley fit that description succinctly.  "Affordable housing" is a liberal misnomer for "pending war zone" around here.

Allen,  Appreciate your informed estimate of CA subdivision half-life.  I live in a decent two-generation old neighborhod of entry level houses.  My street is the hottest real estate market in the state.  Many sales are to Hispanic-American landlords who immediately fill the houses with the matricula consular crowd.  This is a mixed blessing.  The new neighbors are nearly all hard working people who seem bent on improving the neighborhood, yet some  have rojo o azul baggage.  There have been incidents recentlly.  New invigoration or war zone?  Only time will tell, Billl

Just three weeks from today and the Fifth Annual will be almost over.Arrangements are pretty much in hand here, and I reckon it's time for those planning to attend to indicate their intentions so i can make suitable reservations for the dinners (Friday and Sunday).Forgive me if I miss anyone in my faulty memory banks, but I know that Deputy Al, Buckshot and Donna, Curmudgeon, Duke(?), ammohead(?), Idabull & wife, Mac & wife, Ernie and LINDA, 45nut, TimB (and wife?) and quite a few others are coming. ben in Colorado is hoping to make it, too.If I haven't mentioned your handle above, please post your intentions here in the next few days. I will appreciate it.The ol' juices are starting to move here! Let's make this one the best yet.

My friend Ernie enticed me with his report of last years gathering. I am delighted that the days off god smiles this year and I look forward to meeting more leadheads. What time do we meet friday? It is my intention to stay the course throughout the weekend. See you soon

Oopsboom, pard; (interesting handle, that; we'll all have to discuss it...my usual routine is more like boom...oops, or boom...ah, sh--!)

ANYWAY, it's great news that you will attend. Ol' Ernie can be a persuasive cuss, I'll bet. I believe I'll reserve the back room at Las Margaritas for 1800 hours on the Friday, which allows a good long day on the road for those travelling longer distances.

Bring plenty of ammunition....

Time grows short. Over the next 24 hours or so, I will be compiling the list of all who have indicated their intention to attend, so that I can advise the restaurants of our needs. I will also post the list here, so we can double-check that no one has been inadvertently overlooked.

For reasons which I'd rather not get into here, I have some concerns about Las Margaritas. The Flying Pig now has a much-expanded menu and is still turning out very good grub. I believe that if you folks will trust my instincts in this matter, I'll move the Rools Kommittee meeting of Friday night to the Pig. The back room there is convenient, and protects the innocent regular customers from the "exploits" of us boolit-casting types.

The Pig sounds great and they have a good choice of beer on tap besides great meats. Both me and the Mrs. will be in early Friday. Are we going to meet at the Gridle at Noon? Brazos will also be there early on Friday. I have been working on loading .50 cals such as a .50 Remington Army 1871 Roller and a 50/348 wildcat on a rolling block action, not sure if I will bring the 50/90 like Bruce just changed to a 45/70 but will bring a 50/70 RB that is new to us this last fall. You still may want to keep us on one end of th firing line so we don't smoke out everyon else, away from the peak as wind comes off it, Yes, we are getting ready and can't wait.
Looking forward to meeting friends from last year and meeting new ones.

Bruce,  One advantage of the Flying Pig that I remember fondly from the first Winnemucca shoot is that the back room is very table-hopping friendly.  It makes it easier to meet and greet everybody.  Jaremy and I can arrive whenever you wish Friday to help out with range setup, if needed.  Please let me know when the work party, if any, begins.  Regards, Bill

The Flying Pig works just fine for me.

I'm pretty much ready to go right now--as much unlike last year as two extremes of readiness could be.  Ammo is almost finished--gotta re-stuff the 45-70's I emptied out Saturday, and maybe get some of the new MM 32-120's fitted into 32 Mag brass too.  Heck, I might even be able to run a pot-load of metal out of the furnace, just for the pure joy of starting a vacation in right and proper style.  Still not certain which short guns will be coming along--gotta bring a few extras to fill out old Buckshot's thin stock of sidearms, ya know.......he has more rifles by accident than I do on purpose, though.

Looking forward to this in no small way!  Great friends, fine food, and heavy metal downrange.......can it possibly get any better?

..........Just this afternoon finished loading all the rifle ammo. 577-450, 45-90, .43 Mauser, 8x57, and 7.62x39. Now all I have to do is load 45 Colt and 38 Special, but that's Dillon work and will be fast.

The flying pig sounds fine to me too.

Lost Cajun,

There will be plenty of pics taken I assure you.  Last year I had a mis-hap and my pics were deleted from the camera       before they were shared but there were lots of pics taken and most are on CastPics.

Got a bit of loading done tonite,,45 Colts and 357Max for the Rolling Block.  Gotta find my 30-40 Krag dies to get some of those loaded up and then a few 308's and 30-06's will be next on the loading blocks.  45-70's I have a few that are already loaded too..wink wink .   The 45acp duties will be handled on the Dillon then a few 454's on the same machine.  Gotta get some 25-35's yet for the side-match....I can't shake the feeling I am forgetting something though.

This list includes 21 people, and I'd really like to find out if I've missed anyone(apologies in advance), and also whether or not ammohead and Duke intend to be here. The Pig's back room is reserved, and Ormachea's is just waiting for the final number of shooters.

Many thanks for the offers of assistance. About all we have to concern ourselves with on Friday is picking up the heavy-lifting items like tables, chairs, and steel targets. I don't have the flatbed truck any more, so it may take an extra pick-em-up to do the job. Half an hour or so setting-up on Saturday morning at a time to be decided at Rools Kommittee, and we are underway! A nice lunch on Friday sounds good, though. I'll get back to y'all on that.

Weather here is still lousy, with high winds (and it snowed at the mine yesterday, 1000' higher than Winnemucca) and as mentioned before I am making a Nevada bet that the longer the poor stuff stays, the better our chances are for good weather on the weekend in question. Am I whistling in the dark??? I hope not!

Natcherly, the D.A.'s Office sent me a subpoena Monday for a Wednesday (yesterday) jury trial.  It gets under way today, and I'm set to testify on Monday, first day of vacation.  Should be no effect on trip to Modoc or NCBS, 'cause I told the D.A. I'm a gone goose on Monday evening.  Just annoying, though--happens EVERY time I schedule time off for hunting, fishing, shooting, or other outdoor recreation.

Must be a vast PETA/Handgun Control Inc. conspiracy.  I just know it.

Bruce,  Duke is very unlikely to make it this time.  The traditional "Duke's room"  party will be held in curmudgeon's room Friday night, if agreeable to all.  Wheelman, after a much-enjoyed three months out of work, is back nose to the grindstone, so he won't make it this year either.  No contact with ammohead, doggone it, Bill

.........Bill, the traditional "Duke's Room" was Sunday night, but Friday works for me in any regard. Very sorry to hear of Duke and son's probable no show. Both are fine gentlemen and easy company to be with. Last I heard was Ammohead said he'd be there. Due to his new job deals being out of town he did mention that he might not arrive until Saturday and/or he might have to leave earlier then expected on Sunday. Hopefully he does show. Hate to overload the Sport Trac with that 348 Win brass if he's not going to be able to attend .

.........Bill, the traditional "Duke's Room" was Sunday night, but Friday works for me in any regard. Very sorry to hear of Duke and son's probable no show. Both are fine gentleme

Of course you're right Buckshot, Sunday night it is.  It would be a shame to meddle with a long-established tradition because of this old geezer's brain fart.  Just called the motel and re-confirmed the room for Fri, Sat,Sun nights.  It is a downstairs room so that no partygoers can roll down the stairs.  Looking forward to the festivities!  curmudgeon

.........Curmudgeon, too bad we weren't a bit more flush. Then we could also rent the room above and to either side so the neighbors couldn't complain like last year. And I thought we were being so quiet too!

Buckshot, we WERE being quiet.  As boolit casters, we try to do something for everyone--and those folks just wanted something to complain about.

No sweat, Buckshot.  Last year the room was rented in Duke's name, this year in mine, and if my stepson Jaremy has a good time this year, we can use his name next year.  Besides, the odds are that a new bunch of neighbors will be there.  We can baffle the motel management with B.S. for many years to come.  Also, the motel manager is from NJ  so we can pretend we are too Western to understand her.  All that is IF the shindig is held in Winnemucca next year.  Quien sabe?

The new picture is Ok by me.  I think it shows me shooting my Marlin 1894 Cowboy, which reminds me I'd better get out to the garage and finish loading a couple hundred .44 Mags for it right now.  curmudgeon

Well, it's good to know that I'm not the only one still needing to stuff hulls before NCBS.  I finished the 44-40's yesterday--the old '73 might just have to come along--and you don't want to rush those easily-crumpled thin-walled critters through a die.  Gotta finish the 32 Mags, 45-70's, and 45 ACP's now.  I had huge plans to get everything packed and ready yesterday--but when the court appearance for Monday got set aside, I went into major lollygag mode.

First day off/on vacation and all that.......I can see I'll be a picture of sloth and decadence when I retire, for sure.  Had to watch the MLS soccer match on TV (San Jose vs. DC United), and that 14 year old kid that DC just acquired did a good job.  San Jose's Landon Donovan is a local product (Redlands), and he's something special too.

Allen, I am as far behind as you are.  Just yesterday, we completed the final sight-in and kid training session pre-Winnemucca.  All boolits are cast, but still have to select, size, and lubricate  314299s for the Springfield and 311413s for the No. 4 Enfield.  Then there is .30/06, .303, and .44 Spl. ammo to load.  Somehow, it always gets done, but I don't know how.  I do know that it will all come together with no time to spare on Thursday night, just in time for my 0300 wake up Friday morning.  It may have something to do with the brilliant but flaky lifestyle of southpaws.  Rest assured that the Wolf .22 LR Match Target  is ready for your test drive of my CZ 452 rifle.  Hah, at least one caliber I don't have to load!  Bill
