Just got my third or fourth 'Fouling Shot'. What caught my eye was the postal matches, especially the military rifle in different sight configurations. After looking at the groups and scores, I thought, "I can do that." Last Saturday I shot a first string winning small group of about two and half inches (10 rounds, 100 yards) with an 'as issued' Rem 03A3, and of course, real boolits. I think my aggreagate score was around 287-7X, high single was [I think] 97-3X. I've also got a RI 03 with Ly target sights front and rear in a sporter stock that I think can do even 'mo betta' dan dat.The other thing I noticed was how many competitors were using the 314299 and 311284. And then I read the [reprint] article by Frank Marshall about --- get this ---filling the throat and keeping the speed down. Hmmmmm, stuff we've been talking about amonst ourselves for how long???Methinks I willrevisit some things I did years ago just for grins. Last night I checked some fired cases from the Rem 03A3 (Rem 2-groove), the RI (a really nice HS bbl), and a NO (03A3) scoped sporter (Rem 2-groove). With the cooler wx and getting dark ealier I will have a little time to load some small batches of test stuff. First up will be decap and NO sizing and load with 314299 (which has worked well for me before - I have some notes using of all things 4064) long enough to load into the lands. Enough 4227 to run it at something around 1500. Y'all premember Felix's comment about velocities in multiples of 300? Well, there may be nothing to it, but it is places to adjust from. Thinking back over the years, many of my best loads are just that way. Like I said, 'jest fer grins.'So, back to what got this thread started. How many y'all participate in any of these CBA postal matches? sundog

Sundog, keep in mind as you slow the boolit down, recoil control becomes proportionally more severe for the same apparent accuracy.  This means you have to concentrate MORE on follow through to maintain your winning expectations.  We have to keep velocity and resulting recoil within the realm of shooting ability, which is much easier said than done. ... felix

What Felix said -- doubled.  To shoot the very best possible groups you really need to put the gun in some sort of mechanical rest to get as much of you out of the equation as possible (within whatever the rules permit for bags, etc).

Funny thing though, in attempting to beat the CBA boys best benchrester groups do you run the risk of "becoming one"?   You know what I mean ....

Bad thought here, sorry.    I appologise.

Just remember to sign all your winning targets "A Shooters Alumnus".

Whup up on them good Sundog !!!!!

Ah! So true, Oldfeller.  We just might become a BR guru for a fraction of a second!  The time it takes to figure those weather conditions have more to do with a winning group than pure shooting system ability.  Guys with Ruger simi-custom 22 autos can beat the 22LR BR gunners quite often at 100 yards.  More or less shows what really happens out there during a competitive shoot for real. ... felix

I'm with Sundog on this one: Both Frank Marshall, Jr.'s and C.E Harris' articles in the current Fouling Shot are worth reading. ...Maven

I still re-read my CBA stuff from `96 thru 2000 as there was valuable "musings" submitted from time to time. The Postal Matches was tempting to me but I wanted my casting buddy to join me as well. Kinda like going to a new range w/out knowing anyone.
Never did participate...
Early efforts with my 03`s was pretty much guided by the contributors to the FS. I found Ed`s Red there, and many useful tips such as fitting the bullet to the throat. The light bulb went "on" when I read the description on how to drop an as cast naked CB into the chamber, press fit it with a short brass rod, and peer towards a good light source to see if any light showed around it. Any visible light around said bullet was a pre-cursor to wasted effort. MY early trials seemed to prove it. (Heh, I had to find out for myself!)
The mechanics of obturation, and being able to control it from the load bench, is most satisfying.
