Great news indeed, and better yet that there's another Republican Senator on board to support Senator Snowe, the original bill sponsor. Who knows? Maybe this will get Senator Collins to jump on board publicly as well (though I'm certain she's assisting backstage already.

In any event, KUDOS to SENATOR JOHANNS!!

(As an aside, I've been swamped at work recently, so my posts have dropped off as of late. I'll try to pick up the pace a little! - Heh).

I am still not sure if Senator Collins will come forth publicly. My contact told me that if she was not in favor
of the medal it would not have gotten into the NDAA. So she is supporting us.

I was wondering about Senator Collins' co-sponsorship also.  Trying to understand why the esteemed salon from Maine (a beautiful state that throughout our history has given so much to our nation's defense) might be reluctant to "come out".  Is there some political risk or conflict realized by supporting recognition of Cold War veterans?  Just wonderin' if somebody here might be able to enlighten.  Is it potential long term veterans benefits that might be awarded, like war period pensions or something like that that scares 'em off?  There must be some issue concerning the Cold War Medal that gives pause to a lot of our senators and representatives....if we understood exactly what that reservation was, then we could address it directly, but not knowing what it is, makes our task of winning over sideline representatives more difficult.

Sure does seems like real momentum though.

Senator Collins supported the medal as reported out by the Armed Services Committee.  It would be difficult for her now to co-sponsor a bill with different language.  If we pick up co-sponsors, that's good.  But for senators, they are about to vote on the NDAA -- that's our focus in the Senate.

I think it is better being referred to as the Service Medal rather than Victory Medal because they don't want to upset the Russians, and also there is no argument about whether we won or someone just gave up.

I don't think a CWSM will entitle you to VA benefits, that is determined by whether you have a service connected disability, POW Medal or Purple Heart.
All others are allowed to go to the VA like any other doctor or hospital, but how much you pay is determined by your income, and your insurance.

You are only eligible for a pension if have a NDSM, so that should not be a concern.

I think it is best as it is now, the SOD decides who is eligible, what the design is, because there are already two different ones floating around now. That there are already two different versions, with dies already in existence, and already designed, may be a good thing, maybe not.

As for the design, once Congress Approves, the DoD has to submitt a design(s) to the the Heraldy department for research and approval.  (I'm not sure what the department's title is).  There, they will research and determine if the design voids copyright laws, ensures the design, colors are appropriate, etc.

Although its possible, I doubt DoD will continue to use the same designs that are being used due to legal grounds.  Although, the design might be similar....
