"In the midst of The Cold War, the mammoth U.S. Army Air Defense Command stood as America's last line of defense"

" The children of the Baby Boom were not, as their fathers who defeated Germany and Japan had imagined, destined to grow up in a non-threatening world.  At home their parenrs built backyard bomb shelters they would later convert to fall out shelters.  During air raid drills, school children left their classrooms to huddle in darkened hallways.  Announcements that " This station is about to conduct a test of the National Early Warning Broadcast System" interrupted the innocent melodies of the "Hit Parade."  The Cold War had arrived, bringing with it the threat of undreamed horrors.  It was to last nearly half a century, and for the greater part of the struggle, antiaircraft artillery men were to serve as front line soldiers."

U.S. Army Air Defense Command (ARADCOM) was the only US Army Combat Operational Unit in CONUS during those years with a peak TOE strength of bout 48 Thousand Soldiers.................serving.

Just an explanatory note:  ARADCOM (US Army Air Defense Command) was created as a deterrent to the Soviet Nuclear Bomber threat.  The Soviets flew Badgers, Bears and Bison during the early 50's and still do, during the Cold War.  The Soviets came to know and understand they could not penetrate CONUS Air Defenses without taking unacceptable losses.  Krutchev would have lost his bomber fleets in the skies over America and Canada.  That documented fact caused the Soviets to switch from nuclear bomber fleets to nuclear armed ICBMs, which in turn created what we in the US called the "Missile Gap".  The US quickly developed it's own ICBMs which closed the gap and served as the preeminent deterrent to the real time Soviet threat of that period.

SACWARRIOR (Scott my Brother) and The USAF commanded, maintained and was on a war footing 24/7 (as I was before him) and became the major US Defender against nuclear holocaust.

During the period when Nike Ajax and Nike Hercules troops were being drawn and transferred to MACV (Material Assistance Command Vietnam), Nike batteries were either being phased out and/or transferred to the Army National Guards ( I trained some of them).  Nike Ajax and Nike Hercules as operated and manned by the Guard were eventually phased out, as well, but never replaced as a last line of defense deterrent (too bad).

Like people, technology moves on...........................................................into history.

Jim, just a simple technical correction. MACV was "Military Assistance Command Vietnam".

Paul you are correct!  Sometimes my brain becomes foggy, as in "foggy bottom".  Sometimes I confuse MACV and MAAG.  What can I say............................The Boys of Nike, those who still live are now old men like me, holding at 72 and looking for 73.  God Bless.

Another explanatory note for those who would like to know.  The US Navy and my Brother, Paul Dudkowski served at sea during the Cold War and his contribution was equal to all others in service during that window of time. The US Navy in no small order won the day and I'm not patting anyone on the back, just telling it, the way it was.

Hell Jim, for a long time I thought it stood for Military Advisory Command Vietnam. We all learn eventually. Take care Comrade.
