     Jerry,
No one can say you didn't give it your all. Thanks for all your efforts. I'm sorry to see you step down, but you must do what you think is best. I imagine frustration played a part in your decision, and rightfully so. The time is just not right for a Medal now and may never be, but those who served should not feel their service was unimportant. They did their job.

Secretary Hagel has halted production of the new medal and ordered a review of  the ranking. Whether he will change the precedence is unknown, but at least, he listened to the concerns and acted.

The Military Order of the Purple Heart has joined the VFW in asking the Pentagon to reconsider the ranking of the new video medal. When will the Legion put its position behind this effort?

I don't begrudge these people the medal itself; warfare has changed and what they do is important and undoubtedly saves lives. The thing I find hard to comprehend is that the Medal is to rank above the Bronze Star, just below the Silver Star. Many a Bronze Star receipient has gone through Hell earning their Medal and the drone operators are to be awarded a higher ranking Medal for basically playing a Video game. Go figure.

    Posted on 10/04/2012

The American Legion, Post #10, Manassas, VA is sponsoring the 4th Annual Veterans Day Parade on November 10, 2012 in Old Town Manassas. The first Veterans Parade in Manassas was dedicated to Veterans of World War Two, the second to Korean Veterans, and last years parade was a long overdue Welcome Home to Veterans of the VietNam conflict. This years parade is dedicated to those veterans who served during the Cold War. The parade is quite an impressive affair, featuring a number of marching units, usually including some Pipes and Drums as well as other musical units. If you are in the area, stop by Old Town and enjoy the parade. It kicks off at 1100.

Has anyone in a leadership position contacted the staffs of  the Republican candidates for Pres/VP to
determine their position on the Cold War Medal? I realize, based on the experience with then candidate
Obama, that politician's promises aren't worth a bucket of spit, but it would be nice to know where the
current candidates stand. They certainly seemed supportive of Veterans at last night's assembly.

I would like to thank Jerry for his service to our country and for his service to this organization. I don't know him personally, but I think he did a great job within this organization. I'm sure he suffered much frustration; now the important thing is to take care of himself and get back to 100%. Also, Thanks to Frank for stepping into the breach. I'm sure the next couple of years will also be frustrating. In my opinion, the chances of getting a Cold War Medal authorized in the current climate are slim to none. I think the best we can do is to attempt to keep the issue alive, and possibly make some gains at the State level.

I am a Charter member of this group and belonged to the "other" Cold War organization prior to the forming of this group. I have been a strong supporter of the quest to obtain a Cold War Medal and have sent more emails to Congressmen and Senators than I care to count. Nevertheless, if it comes down to aligning ourselves with the MoveOnorg. to obtain said metal, I would choose to do without.

     Paul,

I share your frustration. After all these years of striving, I'm beginning to feel like Don Quixote tilting at windmills. With the current supposedly austere budgets, the chances of succeeding this years do not appear good.

In my opinion, and that is all it is, I think we have some bruised egos here. I don't believe this animosity is doing anything to further our cause, which I believe is to gain recognition of  the contributions the Cold War veterans have made to this country. I said this previously, I believe these personal conflicts should be addressed somewhere other than on this Forum.

Just my opinion, but I don't think a Cold War Medal should have any effect on VA healthcare. I personally don't believe any veteran, regardless of when they served, should be entitled to VA healthcare simply because they served in the military. If you have a medical condition that is the direct result of your military service, you should be entitled to treatment at the VA regardless of when or where you served. If it is not service related, you should not be eligible, period.
This is probably a minority view, but, in my opinion, service to one's country is not only a privilege, it is an obligation. I regret that such a small percentage of present day Americans feel they owe something to their country. Rather, too many seem to feel, the country owes something to them.

In my opinion, we should not even consider  changing the name of the Medal. We originally started with the "Cold War Victory Medal"; this morphed into the "Cold War Service Medal", why, I guess to be more politically correct, but I don't think further changes are needed. Changing the name is not going to change the thinking on the subject at DOD. They will resist it whatever the name, so why change?

Additionally, Sen. Jim Webb, Dem., VA, is not seeking reelection. The ACWV is losing two strong supporters who both carried considerable weight in their respective parties.

I have no problem with 29 palms pursuing his goals; I just don't think this forum is the proper place to do so. The mission of the ACWV is to obtain long overdue recognition for Cold War veterans (Military). The issue of DOD contractors joining VSOs is a completely separate issue. If he feels so strongly, perhaps he should form a new organization to pursue that goal, complete with it own forum.

<!-- [if gte mso 9]> Normal 0 MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 29 palms. I didn’t run out of words; I simply realized the futility of continuing a discussion that would not accomplish anything. I could never change your mind and you definitely won’t change mine. We had a discussion several months ago when you floated an equally far out proposal that all former service members have access to military bases and facilities such as the PX. That too led to an impasse. Personally, I could care less if the VFW granted membership to military contractors. I don’t belong to the VFW and have no desire to belong. I do belong to the American Legion, which, where I live is far more active and has better facilities than the VFW. The reason I got into this discussion originally is because I hate to see someone denigrate the achievements of another group in an effort to advance their own agenda, which is what I think you did to the WWII Merchant Marines in your original posting. Fortunately, in my opinion,  your proposals are so unrealistic the probability of them ever being implemented is practically zero.

29 palms, I didn't fall into any trap. I am fully aware the Merchant Marines were civilians, and well paid civilians too, compared to those serving in the military at the time. I also know what they faced. I was in High School during WWII and  saw many accounts in the papers of the times and news reels at theaters depicting some of the combat they faced. I would venture there were far more Merchant Marine casualties in WWII than there have been contractors in 10 years involvement in the Mideast. In my opinion, there is no comparison between what they did and what present day contractors are doing I repeat, I think they deserve everything they received

It is hard to imagine the peril the Merchant Marines faced during WWII. Even before the war, in transporting Lend Lease supplies to Europe, they faced grave dangers. I doubt if the Merchant Marine in subsequent conflicts faced anything comparable to what they did. I think they earned everything they got. They certainly are true warriors more so than those who serve as contractors in the present engagements.

I fully understand there are bound to be differences of opinion on any matter, but my understanding was the purpose of this forum is to support the effort to obtain the Cold War Service Medal. Personal attacks and other like matters have no place here. If you must attack one another, I suggest you do via email, not on this forum.
